Rodeo Houston is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association/ProRodeo and the Women's Professional Rodeo Association, the major governing bodies for the sport, ensuring that this event is produced professionally and safely. All contestants are members of ProRodeo or the WPRA.

Reliant Stadium hosts six ProRodeo events and one WPRA event as part of its premier competition: bareback bronc riding, barrel racing, bull riding, tie-down roping, saddle bronc riding, steer wrestling and team roping.

Ranked as the world's largest with more than 1 million spectators, Rodeo Houston invites only the top cowboys and cowgirls in the sport to compete inside Reliant Stadium.

One of the richest PRCA rodeos, Rodeo Houston draws the top contestants in each event to compete. At the 2005 Rodeo Houston, 480 invited contestants competed for a rodeo purse totaling $748,000, plus trophy saddles. Winning a Rodeo Houstonchampion title is a big stride toward earning a paycheck that will lead a contestant to the NFR.

Rodeo Houston pays bonus money to event winners at each of the performances leading up to the finals. These event winners each receive $500 performance bonus checks. In the roughstock events - bull riding, saddle bronc riding and bareback bronc riding - the winner with the highest announced score takes home the check. The timed event winners - team roping, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing - are those with the fasted announced times.

Rodeo Houston has been honored as ProRodeo Indoor Rodeo Committee of the Year eight times in the past 12 years. In 2006, Rodeo Houston finals will once again be part of PRCA's Winter Tour.
